7 Good Reasons Why It is Time to Break Up with Your House

“Nothing lasts forever except death and taxes” or something like that…    Throughout your adult life time, your needs are sure to change.  Below are some reasons that might lead you to consider whether your home is still right for you.

You Have Outgrown Your House

Are you expecting a new baby?  Starting a new life with a new spouse?  Picked up a new hobby or ten?  It could be that your two bedroom house has begun to burst at the seams.  If you can’t find the “place” for “everything in its place and a place for everything”, now might be a great time to consider breaking up with your current house and getting an upgrade.

Your House Has Outgrown You

Did your kids suddenly grow up overnight leaving you with a half empty home and a whole lot less laundry?  Did that country song where your dog, pickup truck and wife all leave you finally happen to you? Downsizing your house might be in your best interest.  You can spend that extra cash on a red convertible or two.

Everything Needs Updating

Do you like watching HGTV but don’t actually like the “doing” part?  Did the handle just come off of your oven, the faucet start leaking and paint start peeling all in the same week?  If your home is in need of a remodel and upgrade but you aren’t ready or able to deal with the inconvenience and hassle, it might be more fun to find something finished and ready for you.

Your Job Has Changed

Did you used to commute 15 minutes each way but found the perfect job is now an hour away?  Do you now work from a corner of your living room in your pajamas most days?  Work has changed a lot recently and you may need more space, privacy and doors in your home to survive.

You Need Good Schools

Maybe that two bedroom condo seemed like a great idea at the time, but now that Billy and Sally are in school you have your eye on a particular district.  Maybe you always wanted to have your kids grow up in a small community or need them to have the opportunities of a big district.  Our kids make us see the world a little differently and that might mean reevaluating our housing decisions.

Your Physical Needs Don't Match Your House

Do you have a two story and what you need is a ranch?  Is there not a way to accommodate additional space, grab bars or safety items?  Does your loved one have more therapy equipment than you do closets?  It might be time to look at a home with a more universal design friendly floor plan. (or to brainstorm with your favorite realtor on possible solutions to buy you time in this one)

You want less maintenance (or more!).

Do you hate spending your evenings or Saturdays doing yardwork?  Is replacing a kitchen faucet last on your list?  Or do you long to get your hands in the dirt in a real garden rather than a box one?  Is HGTV calling your name?  Find a home that fits that you that you are today.

Do any of these add up to a reason to move?  That’s up to you.  You could remodel or make changes to make your home work better for you.  You could think about changes that support your goals.  Or you could find a new home that better fits your needs.

Introduction to Kelly Dahl, Realtor with Keller Williams Platinum Partners

My name is Kelly and I am a realtor with Keller Williams Platinum Partners and Team Olson Properties.

I have been a Johnson County Kansas, Kansas City Metro resident for 20 years now.    I grew up in a small town in Central Kansas where I learned the values of working hard and caring about others.  I bring these qualities to everything I do.

I have been a certified public accountant for 20 years and now am asking to be your realtor as well.

What Do I Love About Kansas City?

I feel so lucky to be living in Kansas City.  Kansas City to me is a big small town.  The best part of a small town is feeling known and knowing that your friends will have your back no matter what comes.  Kansas City has this community and you can find “your people” here that will love and support you.

The best part of a big city is the resources it offers.  Kansas City definitely has this.  From its parks to its shopping to its sports teams and everything in between Kansas City has what you want and need.  Also this small town girl appreciates that they don’t roll the sidewalks up quite so early in this city.

Kansas City has great schools and great hospitals on both sides of the state line.  It is easily driveable, the traffic is tolerable and parking is not hard to find, the way it can be in bigger cities.  And the people here can’t be beat!

How Can I Be of Service?

I hope to introduce those who are unfamiliar with Johnson County KS and the Kansas City metro to the many benefits of living in Kansas City.  I look forward to exploring the city with you.

To those that call Kansas City home, I hope to add value by highlighting resources you may not be aware of that will be useful to you.

I will share ideas to help when you are selling your home and ideas to help when you are looking for a new one.

I will also share community resources and home ideas for those with elderly family members or those with special needs.

Why families with special needs?

I was blessed with my daughter in 2007.  She blessed me with a network of connections and a variety of useful information that I would otherwise not have experienced.  I am grateful to get to share this information with people in the Kansas City community.

Several years ago, it became time to move or renovate my home to accommodate her needs.  I knew I needed to move to a ranch home or make my home work for all of us.  Ultimately, I decided it was better for our family to remodel our home to fit us.

Accessing the help of generous community organizations in KC and other resources, I was able make it work.  I hope to share my story and my insights with families in a similar spot and help them get the right home fit for their family.

I have all these seemingly random skillsets and information that come from being Kelsey’s mom.  I look forward to helping you with any part of your special needs journey I can.  If I don’t know the answer, I will try to find you a resource that does so please ask!

Why families with aging family members?

I loved my grandparents, especially my Grandma.  I have fond memories of spending time with her growing up.  She was active and never slowed down until the day she passed away.  I also have loved family members that have struggled with mobility or cognition as they are getting older.

I believe we should honor our elders and sometimes that means helping them make new decisions, whether that is moving into or out of Kansas City to be closer to grandbabies, moving out of our childhood home or making home modifications to make their home work for them.

Sometimes it also means that we need to look for a new home or ways to accommodate them in ours to continue to give them independence while also giving them the care they deserve.

The team I have joined with Keller Williams Platinum Partners, Team Olson Properties, is qualified to help you with this part of your journey.  Belinda Olson is a certified senior housing professional with the seniors real estate institute so not only does she have the skillset to help with this, she has the resources to back it up.  I look forward to learning from her.

Why everyone?

I put my heart into what I do.  I am dedicated and driven to find the best solution for my clients. Everyone has unique goals and desires in the place they call home.  My goal as your realtor is to entertain, educate and help you get what you want in a home that fits.

So anyway that’s a little about me and what I hope to do here.

Now please tell me about you, what brought you here and how I can help in the comments below or reach out to me at kellydahl@kw.com to get and keep in touch.

I look forward to connecting!
